The Satonda islet consists of the top of an emerging volcano (300 m) and has unique geological features with a salt water lake.
The destruction of the forests on the islet dating back to the 1815 Mt Tambora eruption offers researchers a unique opportunity to study forest colonization.
The Island is home to many bird species and an endemic fish. The Moti Tol lake, in the old Satonda crater, occupies almost half of the island. Sea turtles nest on the islet.
